A CHEO Experience.
Why we play, why we pledge

Text Box: Photo of Dawson Drolet On August 8, 2006 the Drolet family welcomed their newest member, Dawson, into the world.  After a few weeks at home, parents Erin and Dave noticed Dawson was always lying on one side of his head. If they looked closely at Dawson it appeared that the right side of his head was a bit flatter than the other.

At Dawson’s two month check up, the doctor told Erin and Dave that Dawson had torticollis. Torticollis is a form of dystonia, which is characterized by slow, involuntary and repetitive muscle contractions. The contractions can affect certain muscles throughout the body and in Dawson's case were affecting the muscles in his neck. This was causing him to always lie on the right side of his head. It was advised that Dawson see a physiotherapist at CHEO.

At Dawson’s first physiotherapy session at CHEO, his physiotherapist Sarah immediately began corrective stretching exercises. Sarah showed Erin the exercises needed for Dawson's neck and emphasized the importance of doing these on a regular basis.  Without the therapy,  Dawson's head would continue to be flat and the problem could spread to affect his face which could lead to a lifetime deformity.

After only one month Erin could see an improvement in Dawson's flexibility and physical appearance. Dawson returned to CHEO every four weeks for regular therapy sessions and each time there was a noticeable improvement.  He no longer appears to be affected by the torticollis and has just one more follow up appointment remaining at CHEO.

The Drolet's remain huge supporters of CHEO and commend the hospital for the exceptional care provided to their family.
