Volunteer

The CHEO BBQ needs people like you to keep it running effectively. By becoming a part of the largest barbecue of 2010, you are helping to  make a difference.  Every year, our goal is to increase our donation to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. In 2009, we raised $40,000.00 for CHEO and with your help, we’d like to raise even MORE this year.

The volunteer check-in area is located to the left of the main gate.

Do I have to pay admission?

No.  Volunteering gets you free admission to the CHEO BBQ!

What clothes are appropriate?

As most of Ottawa knows, the weather is very unpredictable.  We encourage you to check the weather forecast and dress appropriately.

Is the event still on, rain or shine?

Yes!  Rain or shine, we always have a great time raising money for CHEO.

What should I bring?

Suggested items include:

  • identification
  • a change of clothes
  • sunglasses and sunscreen (or an umbrella if it’s raining)
  • a bright smile!

Is there an bank machine available on site?

Yes, there will be a bank machine on-site.

Is there a secure area where I can keep my purse or bag?

It’s best to leave valuables at home, but there is a volunteer area where you can leave your bag.  Although the volunteer command post is always attended by volunteers and committee members, we cannot guarantee the safety of your belongings.

How do I get to the CHEO BBQ?

Driving: There is limited parking available on site but it fills up quickly.

Bus:  There are buses to and from the event running all day.

How long are the shifts?

Shift times vary in length and are based on your availability – essentially you can work for as long as you are willing and able to! The CHEO BBQ sincerely appreciates your help!

Am I able to enjoy the CHEO BBQ after my shift is done?

Absolutely! We ask that you wear your volunteer t-shirt only while you are volunteering (and change into something else afterwards) to avoid confusion.

Who do I talk to if I have questions at the event?

Questions should be directed to the Volunteer Command Centre on the day of the event.

Can I bring a friend to orientation?

Yes!  We definitely encourage you to help us recruit more amazing volunteers!

Can I bring a friend the day of the CHEO BBQ?

Friends are always welcome!  If a friend is interested in volunteering, you should contact us right away.  Unfortunately we are not able to accept new volunteers on the day of the event.

Are there food and drinks available for the volunteers during the event?

As stated above, the CHEO BBQ provides its volunteers with a lunch voucher including a sandwich and a drink.  Water is also available throughout the day at no cost to the volunteers.
